The origin of Eastern Slavs and the formation of Kievan Rus in the reassessment of post-Soviet historiography

D. Schorkowitz

Abstract

The article is devoted to paradigm shift in Russian historiography of the 1990s. The author considers the changing views of historians on such central issues of early Russian history as the origin of Eastern Slavs and the formation of Old Russian state. There are three major sets of problems: the connection between few early archaeological cultures and Eastern Slavic populations, the role of external and internal forces in the process of formation of Kiev Rus', and changes in post-Soviet historiography. Considerable attention is paid to the archeology and historical linguistics. The author notes the link between the various historiographical conceptions and political situation in which they arose.
