Wonder Michael's Monastery in Kiev: the problem of initiation, symbolism, status

W. I. Ulianovsky

The paper analyzes the cultural significance of one of the most famous monasteries of medieval Kiev - the monastery, dedicated to the miracle of the Archangel Michael. This unique monastery has preserved until now almost all of its monuments. The subject of this study is the ratio of real and imagined in its historical memory. We analyze the significance of the feast, after which the monastery was named. The author relates this religious feast with the idea of confrontation of Christianity and paganism. We investigate the role of the Archangel Michael as the prince's personal and collective military patron in Russia and the role of eschatological motifs in the design of the decorative program of this monument.
